Can’t Get Enough Gets Sudden Sales Boost; Erotica Revealed Review to Blame.

That was my attempt at being witty. A mock headline and all. Honestly, though, what did we do before the internet? How did books get promoted? Did writers go door to door like insurance and Encyclopedia salesmen? Did they depend on store displays alone?

I wonder all these things because I somehow managed to write my stories and get them published before I even had personal access to the internet, or even my own computer. Those were the days of yore, when you could do that type stuff at work and get away with it, because you were more computer literate than your boss, and the minimize button was all the rage.

As time passed on, however, and I began to see writing and selling these stories as more of a permanent thing and not just one of my pick up and drop projects, I realized I needed my own equipment, which happened in due time. Even then, though, I don’t think I had internet access yet. We’re talking the age of the 3.5″ floppy disk here.

All that being said, I got myself completely together and since I had grown comfortable publishing my work in other people’s collection, promotion wasn’t high on my list of priorities. Then Can’t Get Enough happened, and promotion was all of a sudden everything. How many times have I used the phrase “make or break” in the last year?

At the beginning stages of the project I was still living in my rural southern hometown where there was one Walmart, two grocery stores and one book store which eventually closed down. There was one library in which you couldn’t even whisper the word erotica, and that was it.

Luckily, nearly a year before Can’t Get Enough was released, the Universe made it so that my family and I relocated to another state and on the outskirts of a major city. I was booked for signings, I did a blog tour, a reading, I connected with local writers and artists.

But that only lasted so long. After the blog tour, after the readings and the signings, how do you keep the momentum going, I wondered. How do you keep people interested in your book without cramming it down their throats every other day through tweets and otherwise?

Well, thankfully, that’s where reviews come in. I’m happy to be holding steady at five stars over at Amazon, but I get particularly happy when people take the tie to review the book on their blog and when Erotica Revealed gives such and amazing and detailed review, well hell, how can the book not sell?

Here is just a snippet:

Given the title, I expected Ms. Brown’s story to be the last in the collection. However, that place belongs to Annabeth Leong’s incredibly perverse “Objects of Desire.” Once again, Ms. Leong articulates sexual complexities that few other authors would even recognize. This tale of shame, need and kitchen utensils is one of the kinkiest – and most insightful – things I’ve read in months. It made me squirm, which I have to believe was the author’s intention.

Please, by all means, read the complete review here. And if you were one of the wonderful ones who have purchased and read the book, please do take a few minutes and tell us what you think about it, be it on your blog, on Facebook or on bookseller’s websites.

I thank you in advance.

On signing books, guest blogging and being called a “Breakout editor…”

I feel like much of my days are spent playing catch up. For a while there, I was on a roll, posting in sync with daily blog tour stops, updating everyone on new events and appearances, etc. And then I took what I didn’t intend to be a break, but turned out to be one, and now here I am, with so much to tell all at once.

First, yesterday’s blog tour stop. It was at author Annabeth Leong’s place and I wrote a guest post about cars and sex, one of the many sub themes in Can’t Get Enough. You can see it here if you missed it yesterday.

We also earned our 6th 5 star Amazon review yesterday. Very flattering. One of the best yet. Here it is.

Secondly, the book signing. It was this past Saturday at a Books-A-Million in Lawrenceville, GA. By that time I had done a one and a half hour reading with a wonderful group of ladies and was less shaky about appearing in public. Plus, I wouldn’t be required to say the words fuck, pussy or cock in a crowded room. All I had to do was sit there, a table with my books stacked in front of me and wait for the customers to come by, pick up a book and have me sign it. Except, for the first hour plus, I didn’t sign anything.

Well, that’s not completely true. Within the first ten minutes a woman approached me excitedly and asked for my autograph (not in a book, but in her little notebook where she collects them, but still…). I happily gave it to her though I’m still getting used to autographing things and am pretty insecure about my penmanship when do so. But anyway, she asked for a hug which I gladly gave. Hugs are easy. Hugs are reassuring, I can do hugs with no problem. I forgot to take her picture though.

In the last thirty minutes a woman came by and bought a book for herself and one for her book club. That made me extremely happy. Then, who I eventually found out was Gary Wit Da Tea from The Rickey Smiley Show came by, bought a book and took a picture with me. He also bought both my signing mates book (it was Lewis Ericson, BTW). My day was made after that, and then it was time for me to go.

Over the weekend an idea had been brewing in my mind re: marketing and I’m thinking and hoping something will happen with that soon. But, the hubs Googled me today and saw this.

I’m sure there are words sufficient enough to describe how unbelievable happy and proud this makes me, but right now, I just don’t have them. All I have is this feeling of shock and awe. Oh, and nerves out of this world.

Can’t Get Enough is officially available today!

Can't Get Enough

And not just on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Cleis Press, Books-A-Millions, it’s actually, physically in bookstores all around! My plan today was to ride around Atlanta and snap some “out in the wild” picks, but long story short, it didn’t happen. Contributor Monica Corwin however went into her local Barnes and Noble and this is what she saw:

See it stuck right in there between America’s Best Non-required Reading and Rachel Kramer Bussel’s Big Book of Submission?

I swear, it gets more surreal every day.

Though some of the more anxious of us tried our luck early with Amazon (and received our books) , the official release date is today, so you can go to any of the buy links and click freely, or if you’re at your local mall or bookstore, look for me!

The blog tour has been under way since July 10th, but there seems to have been a mishap, so today is an off day. However, you can still visit Quixotic Orchid and comment to win a copy of the book. She will draw one name at random on the 21st.

Can’t Get Enough already has two five star reviews on Amazon, and a fantastic, lengthy and complimentary review at The Vodka Press where Jacqueline Applebee, Annabeth Leong, Miel Rose, JoAnne Kenrick, Sophia Valenti, Tilly Hunter, Shoshanna Evers, and myself all got great mentions.

For a book that hadn’t officially been released until now, the buzz has and the rankings have been amazing.

In The Meantime…

I’m a busy little bee finishing up the manuscript for my very first anthology (squee!) Can’t Get Enough. It’s been a long road, and while I’m glad to see the end in sight, I’m having what I suppose are very normal, mixed emotions about wrapping it up and letting it go, but that’s another post for another day.

While I’ve been away from this blog, I have been featured on others, like Nicole Gestalt’s, where I guest blogged about my story Patches in the Smut Alfresco anthology, and Annabeth Leong’s where she reviewed my story I’d Rather Go Blind which is featured in the Sudden Sex antholgy edited by Alison Tyler. Ms. Leong did an awesome job, by the way.

So, there’s that, and well, finishing this book! 😉
